The Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) is a public university, belonging to the Brazilian Federal Government, with university autonomy, based in the city of Juiz de Fora (MG), with an advanced campus in Governador Valadares (MG). The institution is positioned as a scientific and cultural center in a region of more than three million inhabitants and is ranked among the best universities in Latin America, with national and international recognition.

Constituted as a center for research and knowledge production, UFJF seeks to train ethical, critical professionals with high quality to work both in the job market and in academia and committed to a more just and egalitarian society.

UFJF demonstrates an aptitude for university extension, where it has already developed technology through an application mapping risk areas in areas of social and environmental vulnerability, the Álea application that is currently being implemented by the Minas Gerais Military Fire Brigade, as well as free training at different levels of training

The Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) acts in the articulation between teaching, research, and extension to the demands of society, including university extension actions to reduce the risks of disasters. The agreement signed between the University and the City of Juiz de Fora concerning risk analysis and support for joining the resilient cities campaign should be highlighted.

As a result of this agreement, a public access workshop will be promoted on Youtube in October / 2020 to share the results of the preliminary analysis of resilience in Juiz de Fora, as well as to allow the participation of the population in the formulation of public policies in reducing the risk of disasters and building community resilience.

 

Partnership Activities

In the context of this partnership, Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) undertakes to:

  1. Development of projects, under the responsibility of the focal points, free university extension
    programs, and events focused on the community and training of public agents to reduce disaster
    risks and develop resilience in the communities.
  2. Build partnerships between local and national authorities, together with local actors, civil society
    groups, the private sector, academia, and specialized organizations to encourage the adhesion
    and implementation of the Resilient Cities Campaign.
  3. Disseminate the scientific and technical knowledge of the community and public managers and
    improve access to tools, technology, methodologies, and opportunities for development and
    improvement of organizational capacity for local governments and local actors.
