Abdou Sane is currently they Mayor of Ziguinchor in the south of Sengnal. He is also the President of the Environment Commission, focusing on spatial planning, urban planning and housing. He was a member of the Parliament for 5 years from 2007 to 2012.
For many years, he has been a geography environmentalist working on urban environmental issues. His recently published work on Disaster Risk Governance in Senegal analyzed legislation in Disaster Risk Reduction and was a part of a project of UNDP and the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC).
He is passionate about strengthening risk governance and advocacy for greater DRR investment. This, according to him, is an important step on the roadmap for resilient cities at local level. He has advocated for the implementation of a new code of urban planning and disaster response in Haiti, as well as actively got involved in flood management with the government.
Campaign ActivitiesDRR Champion, 2012-2014: Mr Abdou Sané was first appointed as UNDRR's Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Champion for West Africa in 2010. Due to his continuous commitment to DRR at the national and regional level, UNDRR extended his appointment last year. As a DRR champion, Sane is advocating for the integration of disaster risk reduction in national budgets and promotes the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action in Africa.
