Advocate Biography

Prof. Michael Turner trained at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCLondon. He has worked in the public sector and academia in Israel and holds the UNESCO Chair in Urban Design and Conservation Studies at the Bezalel Academy, where he is coordinator of Research and Development. He is a recognized authority on urban design especially on historic cities. Within UNESCO, he has advised on properties around the world and participated in expert meetings on authenticity, Category 2 Centres and World Heritage for Peace. He was elected in 2005 to the World Heritage Committee and in 2007 a term as vice-President. In November 2009, he chaired the 2nd UNESCO workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction to Cultural Heritage and has been an invited speaker in academic and professional fora around the world. He has managed in Bezalel the EU 7th framework project – Designing Safer Urban Spaces during the years 2011-14 where the inter-disciplinary team developed security products and Urban Resilient Design Guidelines. He has accompanied the UNESCO debate on Historic Urban Landscapes since its inception in 2005 and is currently special advisor to the Director of the World Heritage Centre on urbanism, architecture and conservation. He has been appointed by the UNDRR as an advocate for the Resilient Cities Programme, and is on the committee for integrating culture in resilience and the 2015 Conference of World Heritage Cities on resilience. He is author and co-author of publications, in conferences and national and international refereed journals including: Disaster Preparedness and the aftermath, Urban Resilience in Climate Change, Social sustainability of the Historic Urban Landscape
