See you at the Global Platform in 5 days

17 May 2017

Dear partners,

SEE YOU AT THE GLOBAL PLATFORM IN 5 DAYS!

With only five days to go for the 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction to commence in Cancun, Mexico, UNISDR wishes to extend a warm welcome to the more than five thousand participants registered.

Practical information

Participants are encouraged to bring with them a hard copy of the Global Platform message confirming registration that includes the individual registration number. On Wednesday 24 May, there will be additional security measures that will require more time to get to the Global Platform venue for participants staying in other hotels. Participants are therefore encouraged to anticipate various security check points and arrive earlier on with a valid photo ID and a copy of their confirmed registration.

The Global Platform Programme

We remind participants that the official programme of the GP17 is available through the following link: http://www.unisdr.org/conferences/2017/globalplatform/en/programme. The programme in all UN official languages will be uploaded on 22 May.

Preparatory Meetings

We encourage participants to learn about and attend the significant number of interesting preparatory events being held on 22 and 23 May (of thematic, regional, sub-regional and stakeholder-specific nature.) The list of this meetings is available in the official programme of the GP (see above).

Speed Networking

The Global Platform will feature Speed Networking segments that will foster exchange and enable participants to meet potential partners in a fun and interactive environment. A typical session is expected to last one hour, with between 15 to 25 participants meeting each other. Interested in hosting a Speed Networking Event? Read our Quick Guide to Setting up your Speed Networking Event here. To reserve the speed networking space for a 1 hour time slot for your event, please fill in the following doodle survey, providing both your name and your organisation: https://tinyurl.com/kannsnw

Green Conference Guidance

Participants and guests are urged to respect the environmental, cultural, social and historical values of the local community. Among other specific actions, the conference venue will be set to 25 degrees Celsius to reduce the use of air conditioning. We therefore recommend that participants do not wear suits and ties, but instead opt for business casual or traditional attire for warm climates, such as guayabera shirts.

Participants and guests are also encouraged to calculate their carbon emissions at https://carbonfund.org/calculate-your-footprint/ and to off-set the equivalent amount at https://offset.climateneutralnow.org/register

When offsetting, all are encouraged to mention under "reason for purchase", #MEXICOGP17, and to post about the offset on social media using the hashtags:#MEXICOGP2017 and #GoGreen
