Most of the Kawauchi Villagers were evacuated due to the 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant located less than 30km away.
Since January 2012, with radiation doses having abated, the Village became the first local government to have initiated return of evacuees, and pursued reconstruction efforts with the assistance of Nagasaki University.
This event provides and best practices for multidisciplinary community response and recovery in any future nuclear hazards in the world, based on lessons learned by the Village in decontaminating soils; managing intake radiation risks from foods and waters; inhabitants' health care; and restoring eco-health system.
