This paper addresses the vulnerability of modern societies through the concept of sustainable development, taking account of all elements that can influence the environment for urban planning and bearing in mind the objective of public safety and health.
This paper is a summary of presentation by Mr. Philippe Masure, International Association of Engineering Geology, made at the technical session "Natural disaster reduction: effects of disasters on modern societies" at the World Conference on Natural Disaster Reduction, Yokohama, Japan, 23-27 May 1994.
