Preventive community relocations are a vital DRR strategy and nowhere are they more relevant than in the Arctic. Alaska Native indigenous communities are forced to consider relocation in an effort to protect their lives and preserve their lifestyles and culture. In the absence of institutional mechanisms for preventive relocations, Alaska Native tribes are working with state and federal government authorities to develop a community-based approach to determine when and how they should occur. This event will showcase their work and also bring experiences from other regions such as the South Pacific to share lessons learned and good practices.
