Critical Infrastructures (CIs) are the assets, systems, and networks vital for the functioning of a society, its wellbeing and economy. We would like to present at the Global Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction two innovations that could significantly and effectively support the achievement of resilience for new and existing, CIs, namely: a) EISAC.it, Italian node of the European Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Centre ; b) CIPCast Decision Support System, DSS, and a suite of innovative technologies all created to boost EISAC.it simulation and analysis capabilities.

The critical importance of CIs and therefore the imperative need to enhance their resilience to disaster risk is recognized by the Senday Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, that has among its seven targets the following “Substantially reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services, among them health and educational facilities.

EISAC.it, (http://www.eisac.it/) is a competence center for CIs protection in Italy, and it is part of EISAC framework, an EU-wide initiative aiming at establishing a European-wide collaborative platform among different competence centers (similar to EISAC.it) all over Europe.

CIPCast DSS, is a user-friendly and interoperable platform and database conceived as a combination of free/open source software environments including GIS features for the real time and operational (24/7) monitoring and risk analysis of interdependent critical infrastructures. CIPCast DSS provides simulation capabilities for both real or user-defined critical events allowing to periodically assess disaster risks, vulnerability, capacity, exposure of CIs, hazard characteristics and their possible sequential effects at the relevant social and spatial scale.

CIPCast DSS can support and improve dialogue and cooperation among scientific and technological communities, other relevant stakeholders and policymakers in order to facilitate a science policy interface for effective decision-making. CIPCast DSS can support experiential learning and awareness-raising beyond the more specialized DRR community .

CIPCast DSS can support decision-making processes towards the identification and selection of resilience enhancement strategies and cost-effective DRR for CIs.
