The Risk Award 2019 will celebrate efforts in coastal resilience

11 September 2018, Geneva -

Nominations are now open for the 2019 Risk Award to be awarded to an individual or organization for outstanding recognized action that contributes to building the resilience of costal nations and communities which are particularly exposed to extreme storms, erosion, sea level rise and environmental changes.

The award, proposed by Munich Re Foundation, the Global Risk Forum GRF Davos and the United Nations Office for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), will offer €100,000 to a project that will contribute to reduce the risks of people living in coastal areas.

It is estimated that more than 40 per cent of the world population lives by the sea.

Projects may include eco-system services or infrastructural approaches, capacity building or awareness raising measures, risk-sensitive land use planning, building codes and among others.

“We hope the award will stimulate the implementation of the Sendai Framework, the global plan to reduce disaster risks by 2030 and build the resilience of local communities most exposed to sea level rise and weather related hazards as climate change accelerates,” said Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Presented for the first time at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva in 2011, the fifth edition of the Award will be handed over during an official ceremony at the next Session of the Global Platform on Disaster Risk reduction in Geneva in May 2019.

In 2017 the award focused on Innovative concepts and technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Risk Management; in 2015 on Disaster risk reduction people-centered, innovative and sustainable; in 2013 on Disaster emergency and Resilience for the most vulnerable and in 2011, on Disaster Risk Prevention and Early warning in urban areas.
