Resilient cities campaign receives attention at Cancun climate summit

Source(s): United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction

Approximately 150 national officials, members of UN agencies, and civil society representatives attended the UN system-wide side event on "Cities and Climate Change: Enhancing mitigation and adaptation action" held in Cancun, Mexico on 8 December as part of the climate change conference. UNISDR Deputy Director Helena Molin Valdes discussed the "Making Cities Resilient" campaign, and how the UN is helping member cities respond to climate change. This is done by improving their understanding of disaster risk, including through up-to-date data on hazards and vulnerabilities. The campaign also promotes investment in critical infrastructure, protecting ecosystems and natural buffers, using early warning systems and facilitating city-to-city learning.
