International
Early Warning Programme launched at the WCDR
On 19 January an International Early Warning Programme (IEWP) was launched
by UN/ISDR's Programme for the Promotion of Early Warning. Proposed at
the Second International Conference on Early Warning held in Bonn, Germany
in October 2003, the Programme is dedicated to reducing disasters through
effective people-centred early warning systems. The IEWP is a vehicle
by which partner organizations cooperate and develop shared and systematic
approaches to advancing early warning systems worldwide, aiming to develop
international dialogue on early warning and related issues.
Further information is available at the UN/ISDR's Programme for the Promotion
of Early Warning (PPEW) website: http://www.unisdr-earlywarning.org

UNEP Environment and Poverty Times for
the WCDR
On the occasion of the WCDR, UNEP published issue number 3 of its "Environment
and Poverty Times" newspaper series. This issue looks at the relations
between different environments - the social configuration, economic possibilities,
institutional arrangements and political systems, the state of the environment,
natural predispositions of an area - and how these influence the occurrence
of disasters and their effects.
