Disaster reduction and the World Summit on the Information Society
UN/ISDR has prepared a background paper contributing to the first
phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) to
be held in Geneva (10-12 December 2003) entitled Information Systems
and Disaster Risk Reduction.

Disaster reduction input to the COP-9
At the ninth session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP-9) in Milan, Italy,
UN/ISDR made a statement concerning the linkages between the disaster
risk reduction and climate change agendas.

8th Meeting of the IATF-DR
The 8th meeting of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Disaster Reduction
(IATF/DR) was held 5-6 November 2003 in Geneva, Switzerland. Key
recommendations of the meeting included development of more national
platforms for disaster reduction; strengthened regional cooperation
in Africa; and advancement of preparations for the World Conference
on Disaster Reduction to be held in Kobe-Hyogo in January 2005.

6th International Congress on Disasters
Organized by the Cuban Civil Defense and sponsored by many national
and international institutions and organizations (including UN/ISDR,
UNDP, PAHO, Save the Children and Association for Caribbean States),
the Congress gathered approximately 300 participants from over
26 countries to share experiences on different topics related to
disaster management.

Inter-agency cooperation for volcanic risk reduction Goma/North
Kivu Area,
Democratic Republic of the Congo
UNDP, UN/ISDR and OCHA have joined forces to implement a project
on volcanic risk reduction, aimed at determining progress, capacities
and needs. Funds are currently being sought to support the project,
which offers a unique opportunity for the three UN agencies responsible
for specific aspects of disaster management to collaborate and
integrate disaster reduction issues into an overall strategy
that addresses conflict resolution and peace building.
