The present booklet covers only a small part of the virtually broad knowledge and expertise now existing globally in the area of disaster management and disaster reduction. Due to recent developments and the growing number of natural calamities in the second half of the 20th Century and the beginning of the 21st Century, the issue attracts an increased attention from scientists, political and social players; hence, the growing number of literature on the subject. Whether the increased number of natural disasters is a result of the growing population settling in previously uninhabited areas or global warming, we are not going to argue. Our goal is to provide some basic information on the key issues of disaster reduction and share this knowledge with communities, NGOs and other implementing agencies working at community level.
The Fourth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction will take place in Geneva, Switzerland in May 2013.
