The socio-economic consequences of the earthquake at Izmit, Turkey (17 August 1999)

This study examines the economic and social consequences of the 17 August 1999 earthquake, known as the Izmit earthquake, which affected a third of Turkey's total population and caused substantial human and material losses.

The first chapter looks at the economic environment in Turkey before the Izmit earthquake and the place which the stricken region held in the national economy in order to compare the situation with the economic trends after the disaster. Chapter II gives an overall assessment of the impact of the earthquake: the direct and indirect losses and the macroeconomic secondary effects. Chapter III contains recommendations for a policy for sustainable management of earthquakes in Turkey.
