Integrating disaster risk reduction into the fight against poverty: GFDRR annual report 2009

This document reports on GFDRR interventions in 2009 and its achievement in maturing into a leading global player in disaster risk reduction and sustainable recovery, a reference for knowledge sharing and capacity building in vulnerable countries, a champion for South-South cooperation and an advocate of the importance of disaster risk reduction as an essential tool for climate change adaptation in developing countries.

It includes: (i) broad country dialogues on disaster risk reduction in 19 poverty reduction strategy papers and 32 country assistance strategies; (ii) strengthening national systems, from establishing disaster risk management units in relevant ministries to local adaptation plans in transport, agriculture, education, health, and social affairs; (iii) pooling catastrophe risk and assessing climate and disaster risk; (iv) integrating climate change initiatives and disaster risk management in development planning; (v) promoting the exchange of knowledge and good practices in risk-sensitive land-use planning and city emergency management systems; (vi) conducting post-disaster needs assessments recognized as standards for government-led partnerships that laid the foundation for resilient recovery and ensured interagency coordination and cooperation.
