Background

Busan’s geographic location poses several types of disaster risks. With three sides of the city bordering the sea, Busan is vulnerable to typhoons and torrential rains. Since many residential areas in the city have formed along mountainous regions, they are more vulnerable to floods and mudslides due to surface runoff. Due to abnormal weather patterns across the world, there is a higher chance of facing a disaster in a very localized area. This has increased concerns over damage from torrential rains which have worsened in recent years due to the effects of global warming.
