Launch of the 2015 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction

Organizer(s) United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction
Venue

Headquarters of the United Nations

Date

The 2015 Global Assesment Report (GAR15) is the leading UN publication on the status of global disaster risk today. The relevance of the Global Assessment Report has become painfully clear, against the backdrop of a number of major disasters, it provides an innovative analysis of the economic cost of such disasters, as well as guidance on how to reduce the significant costs and protect societies.

GAR15 focuses on the issue of strengthening the governance of disaster risk and presents the case for a broad reinterpretation of disaster risk management. As the HFA draws to a close, GAR15 questions whether the way in which disaster risk management has been approached under the HFA is really fit for purpose in a world now threatened by catastrophic increases in disaster risk.
