The concepts of disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction (DRR) are becoming increasingly main-stream on the development agenda. Thus familiarity with these concepts is a necessity for development professionals at all levels.
Disaster Risk Reduction is a systematic approach to identify, assess and mitigate the risks of a disaster. It aims to reduce socio-economic vulnerabilities to disaster as well as dealing with the environmental and other hazards that trigger them. DRR is the responsibility of both development and relief agencies and should not be a one-off activity but instead an integral part of the way these organisations do their work. There is potential for DRR initiatives in just about every sector of development and humanitarian work.
This programme addresses the challenge of how to assess hazards, vulnerability and resilience; which models and tools are helpful; how to maximize community engagement and how to transform information gathered into a professional plan aligned with efforts of others and with government policies?
