This training course is designed to provide participants a general understanding of emerging issues, challenges and opportunities with regard to global and local food security issues and their impacts. It provides participants with food security paradigms, basic concepts/principles, tools and innovative approaches. Issues relating to the interconnection of poverty, hunger, climate change and natural disasters will provide an overall framework for the course.

Participants will study efforts underway among forest, upland and coastal communities in the Philippines. Participatory processes to involve and solicit stakeholder’s commitment to food security programs will also be discussed. Towards the end of the course, participants will develop action plans featuring innovative, participatory, community based approaches to enhance food, nutrition and livelihood security.

Course Objectives


By the end of the course, participants are expected to have:

- articulated the working concepts, principles, tools and interventions on FS.
- an increased awareness of global and local food issues affecting forest dwellers, smallholder farmers and fisherfolks.
- described strategies for the active mobilization of FS stakeholders.
- identified lessons from FS strategies and initiatives that have so far worked and not worked developed an action plan that will improve current FS efforts of participants’ organizations and or introduce new initiatives on FS.
