The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development- Rio+20 is organized to mark the 20th anniversary of the first Earth Summit- the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992. It will bring together world leaders, government representatives, the private sector, international organizations and civil society to renew political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development and address new and emerging challenges.
Disaster risk reduction has been identified as one of the new and emerging challenges in Rio+20. A number of side events related to reducing risk and strengthening resilience are being organized by Governments, the UN system, Major Groups and IGOs.
The Fourth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction will take place in Geneva, Switzerland in May 2013.
