8-10 Oudrift Riverside Lodge, Potchefstroom, NW, South Africa ADVANCED COURSE IN DISASTER RISK REDUCTION
This course is aimed at providing the learner with an enhanced understanding of disaster risk. The first part of the module ensures a level playing field by defining the most important concepts. The section thereafter explores the interrelatedness of hazards, risk and vulnerability. A distinction is drawn between what constitutes a risk, a hazard and vulnerability. The emphasis is also on the classification of hazards. Different categories of hazards are explained. The permanent and temporal characteristics of hazards are alluded to in order to obtain an understanding of their make-up. Once the parts of hazards have been explained the focus is shifted to that of hazard assessment. Some practical application in hazard assessment is covered. The subsequent sections look at vulnerability and the factors that contribute to vulnerability. The last part of this module focuses on risk and vulnerability analysis.
