The Sergio Vieira de Mello United Nations Library at Nairobi is a joint initiative
of the United Nations agencies based in Nairobi, led by the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP). It was officially opened on 30 June 2004. The Library’s
purpose is to develop and maintain a collection of scientific and technical information
on the global state of the environment, human settlements and UN-related issues
which will assist the staff of the United Nations and outside users in analyzing
trends, assessing problems and promoting activities leading to environmentally
sound development. In addition, it acts as a depository library for the United
Nations and some of its specialized agencies.
