Public debate on city resilience a success in Shanghai

Over 200 people attended a public debate on what makes a city resilient against disaster, in Shanghai, China, moderated by top Chinese anchorman Bai Yan Song of CCTV. Mr. Bai posed questions to both the panelists and the public, challenging them to think about creative solutions to reduce disaster risk. The discussion took place on the International Day for Disaster Reduction at the Shanghai Expo, whose theme was "Better City, Better Life".

The panelists invited to the public debate included Mao Zhixiong, Ass't Mayor and Secretary-General, Chengdu Municipal People's Gov't; Yin Yin Nwe, UNICEF-China Representative and Chair of UN Disaster Mgt Team; Henrik Slotte, Chief, Post-conflict and Disaster Management Branch, UNEP; Li Zhong Chun, Editor-in-Chief, China Business Times; and Helena Molin Valdes, Deputy Director, UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.
