Regional Orintation Workshop on the HFA Progress Review, 25th April 2008 Bangkok
The UN/ISDR secretariat in Asia and Pacific and the UNDP Regional Centre in Bangkok, will jointly organize the above orientation workshop on the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) Progress Review Process in Asia. The workshop will introduce to National HFA Focal Points and UNDP programme officers from selected countries in Asia the process of monitoring, evaluating, and reporting progress in achieving the five priorities of action of the HFA. The workshop will discuss why monitoring progress in disaster risk reduction at the country level is important and how the information will inform the 2009 Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. It will also provide opportunities to get familiar with the review methodologies and how to involve national stakeholders in the process. The workshop is supported by the funding of European Union.

Meeting of the Expanded ISDR Asia Partnership, 13-15 February 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand
The Expanded ISDR Asia Partnership is an open-ended informal partnership that aims at ensuring enhanced regional coordination and synergies in disaster risk reduction in Asia and Pacific. The group will meet in Bangkok from 13-15 February to discuss key priority activities linked to the monitoring of progress in achieving the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005 - 2015 (in preparation of the Second Session of the Global Platform on Disaster Reduction in 2009, Geneva), a mapping exercise of disaster risk reduction in Asia and the Pacific, and the preparations for the Third Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Rik Reduction (2-4 December 2008, Malaysia). UN/ISDR secretariat and WHO Launch the World Disaster Reduction Campaign 2008-2009 on 25 January 2008 in Davos
The World Disaster Reduction Campaign 2008-2009: 'Hospitals Safe from Disasters' is a global campaign being launched in Davos, Switzerland on 25 January, by the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) and the World Health Organization (WHO), with support from the World Bank.

The campaign will focus on structural safety of hospitals and health facilities, on keeping health facilities functioning during and after disasters, and on making sure health workers are prepared for natural hazards striking.

Regional Launch of the 2008-2009 World Disaster Reduction Campaign for Asia & Pacific, 25 January 2008, Bangkok, Thailand

A regional launch of the 2008-2009 World Disaster Reduction Campaign for Asia & Pacific was organized by the UN/ISDR Asia and Pacific, WHO South East Asia Regional Office (WHO-SEARO) and WHO for the Western Pacific Regional Office (WHP-WPRO) in Bangkok, Thailand, to echo the global launch of the campaign in Davos.

The regional launch consisted of a brainstorming meeting among key regional partners involved in the issue of health and disaster risk reduction who came up with the initial steps of a regional partnership and long-term strategy for safe hospitals for the Asia and Pacific region.

Fourth Edition of "Disaster Reduction in Asia & Pacific - ISDR Informs" - Call for contributions by 17 February 2008
Please send information about your respective achievements, innovative approaches, projects and activities in disaster risk reduction in Asia and Pacific by 17 February to rosec@un.org with cc to isdr-bkk@un.org. Please note that special focus will be placed in this edition on reviewing activities held on the occasion of the 2007 International Day for Disaster Reduction (10 October 2007) and will launch the theme of the 2008-2009 World Disaster Reduction Campaign on "Hospitals Safe from Disasters". New national platform for disaster risk reduction in Asia - Sri Lanka officially establishes the National Disaster Management Coordinating Centre (NDMCC)
The Government of Sri Lanka officially announced to UN/ISDR on 17 January 2008, through the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), the establishment of the National Disaster Management Coordinating Committee (NDMCC) as the national multi stakeholder coordination mechanism for disaster risk reduction. The latter will support an effective implementation of Sri Lanka's Road Map for Disaster Risk Reduction recently launched by the Government.
ISDR Asia and Pacific team planted 600 trees in a Royal Government site in Hua Hin, Thailand, to offset carbon emissions linked to the office's activities and trips.
Second Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, 7-8 November, Delhi, India
Around 500 participants, including 35 Ministers dealing with disaster risk management and development issues, high level delegations, scientists, practitioners, civil society members and representatives from the United Nations, international and regional organizations participated in the Ministerial meeting and adopted the Delhi Declaration for Disaster Risk Reduction 2007(please make link with doc below) which, as one major achievement, institutionalizes Asian Ministerial Conferences on Disaster Risk Reduction every two years as major political foras in the Asia and Pacific region,. Regional Workshop on School Education and Disaster Risk Reduction, 8-10 October 2007, Bangkok, Thailand
The Regional Workshop was held as the regional closing event of the 2006-2007 World Disaster Reduction Campaign on "Disaster Risk Reduction Begins at School". Around 300 participants attended the workshop to discuss a common approach to disaster risk reduction education and school safety initiatives, and came up with concrete recommendations for action at the regional, national and local levels through the "Bangkok Action Agenda"(please make a direct link to “Bangkok Action Agenda-Final.pdf”) to facilitate the integration of disaster risk reduction and school safety into school curriculum.
