South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC)

SOPAC is the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission, an inter-governmental, regional organization based in Suva and dedicated to providing services to promote sustainable development in 20 Pacific countries. SOPAC’s work focuses on providing assistance to its member countries in three key programme areas: Ocean and Islands, Community Lifelines and Community Risk. SOPAC is cooperating closely with the UN/ISDR in advancing further disaster risk reduction throughout the he Pacific region along the lines of the Hyogo Framework for Action and the recently adopted Pacific Framework for Action 2005-2015 on Disaster rRisk Reduction and Management entitled “An Investment for Sustainable Development in Pacific Island Countries - Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters “.
