2007 UN Sasakawa Award selects two Laureates dedicated to communicating lessons of past disasters
Professor Yoshiaki Kawata from the Disaster Prevention Research Institute in Japan, and Tony Gibbs, a highly respected Caribbean engineer in building safety, have been selected as the two 2007 Sasakawa Laureates. |

Reduction in Asia and the Pacific - ISDR Informs" postponed
to 30 March 2007.

of the third Edition to guide
your contributions into each or selected sections of the publication.
Please note that a special focus will be placed in this edition
on the national and regional commemorations of the International
Day for Disaster Reduction (11 October 2006) as well as to
the theme of Education, including the integration of disaster
risk reduction into school curricula and school safety initiatives,
along the lines of the 2006-2007 World Campaign on Disaster

“Lessons
for a Safer Future” draws on the experiences
of many organisations and individuals during and following
the tsunami. The report offers eleven lessons as a
contribution to the ongoing process of learning how
nations, communities and individuals can become better
prepared for and reduce the risk of potential natural
hazards. |

CRED
Releases the 2006 Disasters in Numbers
The Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) releases
today, 29 January 2007, the figures of disasters triggered by natural hazards
for the year 2006. A total of 395 disasters were recorded in 2006 with 226
caused by floods, 66 by windstorms and 30 related to extreme temperature
events. The 2006 disasters killed 21,342 people. While Asia was the continent
hitted most by disasters triggered by natural hazards, three European countries
- Netherlands, Belgium and Ukraine - ranked among the top ten countries most
affected by deadly disasters. The economic damages in 2006 were around 19
billion US Dollars. |

| Launch
of the 5th DIPECHO Action Plan for Asia: Proposals
for the support of operations in Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao
PDR,
Timor Leste, the Philippines and Vietnam on the promotion of
community-based disaster preparedness initiatives and small-scale
mitigation works should be sent by 31 May 2006 to ECHO . DIPECHO

The Final Draft
of UNPAF Thailand is available
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (TICA) of the Royal Thai Government endorsed
the final draft of the UN Disaster Partnership Framework for Thailand – Final
endorsment of the document will take place at the Joint Strategy Meeting of
1st March in Bangkok
