10 February 2015, TOKYO/GENEVA – Margareta Wahlström, the UN Head of the Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) met yesterday with the Prime Minister of Japan Mr. Shinzo Abe in Tokyo and discussed with him the preparations for the next UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction that will be hosted by Japan in Sendai from 14 to 18 March.

“This is the third time for Japan to host the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. Japan would like to share our recovery experiences with the international community by hosting the Conference in Sendai where the people experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake”, Mr. Abe said to Ms. Wahlström.

Margareta Wahlström expressed her strong expectation that Japan would continue to demonstrate in the area of disaster risk reduction.

They have agreed to work further closely towards the success of the conference as well as to promote international cooperation in this area.

The World Conference will gather a diverse group of Heads of States and government ministers who will adopt a new international framework for disaster risk reduction for the coming ten to 15 years to succeed the Hyogo Framework for Action adopted in Kobe in 2005.

As part of her mission to Japan, the UN Chief visited the new conference facility in Sendai and met Ms. Emiko Okuyama, Mayor of Sendai as well as many officials and partners who are contributing to the success of the conference. Today Ms. Wahlström had a press conference at the Foreign Press Center in Tokyo together with Ambassador, Mr. Suganuma, who is in charge of the WCDRR.
