“Teaching our children the importance of being prepared to disaster risks is the pillar for building present and future resilient societies” said Mr. Mirsad Mulic, Director General of Directorate for Emergency Situations of Montenegro.

The Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters has five priorities, the third of which – the use of knowledge, innovation and education to build a culture of safety and resilience – was the focus of this forum.

Participants discussed how well South Eastern Europe has implemented priority three and built a culture of safety, based on access to risk knowledge and information. The meeting also provided inputs to the post-2015 international framework for disaster risk reduction.

The Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Initiative for South Eastern Europe (DPPI SEE) organized the workshop, in cooperation with the UNICEF Regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (CEE/CIS) the Europe office of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). The Emergency Sector of the Government of Montenegro hosted the meeting.

Nine countries – Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey – were represented at the meeting.

Various ministries of Civil Protection, Education, Health, and Social Protection were represented.
