Chennai launches “Safer Chennai Campaign”

Chennai, one of the first Indian cities to participate in the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) 2010-2011 World Disaster Reduction Campaign – Making Cities Resilient, has launched its own “Safer Chennai Campaign” on 19 August 2010.

Under the presence of the Worshipful Mayor, MA. Subramanian, and the Commissioner, Rajesh Lakhoni, I.A.S, from the Corporation of Chennai, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras, Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam, the Honourable Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission, Prof. M. Naganathan, and the Honourable Member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Prof. N. Vinod Chandra Menon, the nomination certificate from UNISDR was handed over to the Worshipful Mayor of Chennai by Prof. Rajib Shaw, Kyoto University, Japan (he serves as the Chair of the Asia Regional Task Force on Urban Risk Reduction, being coordinated by UNISDR Office in Kobe). The event marked the beginning for Chennai to intensify its efforts in reducing urban disaster risks.

The launching of the Safer Chennai Campaign also served as an ideal platform to release the “Chennai Zone Profile” report, which was undertaken in a multilateral effort between the Corporation of Chennai, the University of Madras and Kyoto University. This report addresses the risks in relation to climate-related disasters at the zone-level of the city and shall support the city’s commitment to meet some of the “Ten Essentials” that will make their city more resilient. (the above publication “Chennai Zone Profile” is to be uploaded at the PreventaionWeb.net shortly).

The multi-stakeholder presence at this event demonstrated the mutual approach between the local government and the academia to spur the process of making Chennai resilient.
