More Lebanese cities pledge to become resilient

In 2010, Beirut, Baalbek, Byblos, Tyre, Saida and Tripoli, six of Lebanon’s most prominent and historic cities, together joined the UN’s “Making Cities Resilient” campaign, signalling a strong intent to improve their people’s safety and preparedness. Today, the number of Lebanese cities in the campaign has grown to 58.

Reducing Disaster Risk in the Arab Region

Cairo. – The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, the world’s foremost gathering of disaster risk reduction stakeholders, will convene from 8 to 13 May in Geneva. UNICEF MENARO is currently researching and developing a pilot mechanism for securing disaster risk reduction expertise for UNICEF projects and programmes. The UNICEF Pool of DRR Experts is designed to initially support UNICEF's DRR initiatives in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Should the pilot be successful, UNICEF hopes that such a pool of talent is of value to all DRR actors, not only in MENA but ultimately at the global scale.

Standardized national disaster databases established in several Arab countries

Jordan is the first country in the Arab region to complete a standardized national disaster database. Egypt and Syria are in the finalization stage, and Morocco and Yemen are expected to be ready by end of December 2010. The establishment of national disaster databases with a specific standardized methodology and tools has attracted other countries such as Djibouti and Lebanon in developing nation disaster losses databases as well.

Regional training on HFA monitoring

In accordance with the recommendations of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters (HFA), in past years, the UNISDR secretariat has facilitated biennial reviews to monitor progress on implementation of the HFA at the national, regional and international levels. To facilitate countries' reporting on HFA progress, UNISDR has developed an online monitoring and reporting tool "HFA Monitor" which was used by 102 countries in the 1st reporting cycle covering 2007-2009. The 2nd cycle of reporting on HFA progress (for 2009-2011) will start in March 2010 with the objective of receiving completed progress reports from governments by September 2010. This self-assessment will provide valuable information on progress in the key areas of disaster risk reduction.
