UNISDR Africa maintains and strengthens partnerships in the region and collaborates with partners including regional and sub-regional intergovernmental organizations such as the African Union Commission (AUC), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS), Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the East African Community (EAC), regional and sub-regional specialized institutions, the National Platforms or coordinating mechanisms for Disaster Risk Reduction, government entities, Academia, UN Agencies and Civil Society.

The African Union Commission (AUC) is UNISDR's main partner in reducing disaster risks in Africa. In particular, UNISDR Africa works closely together with the Department for Rural Economy and Agriculture and supports the AUC with technical assistance, expertise and human resources to build durable institutional and regional capacities for the implementation of the Africa Regional DRR Strategy and the its Programme of Action. The UNISDR has a liaison office in AUC and is supporting the AUC with a DRR Advisor.

Currently, UNISDR is strengthening the capacity of East African Community (EAC) , ECOWAS, ECCAS, SADC and the through support with full time Disaster Risk Reduction Advisors to ensure continuity between regional and sub-regional DRR work and to focus on creating an appropriate environment with partners and stakeholders to implement adopted policies and DRR strategies.
The Fourth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction will take place in Geneva, Switzerland in May 2013.
