Ten years after the first Funds were established to support adaptation activities in developing countries, the world, and Africa in particular, is waiting to see if a deal can be brokered this weekend at the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban which would amount to a quantum leap in the finance available to reduce disaster risk in countries bearing the brunt of climate change.
Disasters in sub-Saharan Africa are increasing in frequency, severity and impacts. On average, almost two disasters of significant proportions are recorded every week in the region since 2000. Few of these ever hit the global headlines but they silently erode the capacities of Africans to survive or prosper. Water, weather and climate hazards dominate the disaster profile of Sub-Saharan Africa, affecting, on average, around 12.5 million people per year.
The Regional Office for Africa engages in the following tasks and activities to support international efforts for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and HFA implementation.
UNISDR Africa maintains and strengthens partnerships in the region and collaborates with partners including regional and sub-regional intergovernmental organizations.The African Union Commission (AUC) is UNISDR's main partner in reducing disaster risks in Africa. UNISDR Africa supports the AUC to build durable institutional and regional capacities for the implementation of the Africa Regional DRR Strategy and its Programme of Action.
